a research project investigating animal social structures, MA Interior Design 2010-11: 3D Design Module
Zebras live in families of 15-20 animals which unite in big herds for better protection from predators. The aim of this project was to create an artificial herd offering that safe feeling to humans. As zebras are grazing animals, the artificial herd needs to be mobile and suitable sites are parks, fields and urban public spaces. Using the average zebra shoulder height and an image survey, the different herd individuals bellies and their position in space was estimated, and a whole herd assembled by inflatable balls based on these dimensions. Each ball has a sensor measuring the air pressure inside, activating a motor pulling the ball up as the air is compressed by the pressure of the crowd, leaving a herd created by humans being close to each other.
